Smultronstället
Karolina Rorat, Ewa Maniak

Smultronstället isa youth-led initiative aimed at revitalizing Väjern’s harbor while addressing key challenges, such as youth migration to larger cities, the lack of youth-oriented spaces, and reliance on seasonal tourism. The initiative takes its name from  “Smultronstället,” a Swedish term for a cherished place of comfort and joy, tied to fond memories and a longing to return.

The project empowers local adolescents by establishing a youth-led organization that transforms an abandoned boathouse along with other municipal huts into vibrant, multifunctional spaces for community engagement, artistic expression, and a sense of belonging. Involving local youth, neighbours, artists, and the municipality, the project uses community-based participatory design to ensure meaningful collaboration.
